RECOVERY AND TRANSFORMATION

Addictions are complex and varied, making the recovery from addictions equally complex and varied. The process of recovery and transformation into a new, healthy life incorporates physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, environmental, and relational elements. Even after undergoing treatment for addiction, the relapse rates can be staggeringly high (50%-90%). Because of the complexity and importance of this issue, and the Christian understanding that God desires to bring wholeness to broken lives, this course sheds light on various aspects affecting the escape from addictions, and points towards a model of transformation, not just recovery.

UNDERSTANDING CHILDREN AND THEIR ISSUES 1

It has been said that children are not simply adults in small bodies. Perhaps no one knows this better than those parents and counselors who fill their everyday helping kids. In order to be the most effective helper of children, the counselor needs to have a firm grasp on the different stages of mental, emotional, and physiological development that children experience as they move from infants to adolescents. In addition, children face unique stressors and challenges that adults may not immediately recognize or understand. Adolescence is the time in life where children make the transition into adult bodies. The hormones and social pressures of this time of life make it one of the most formative times in anyone’s life. During adolescence, teens are broadening their social spheres and are meeting more people who often do not share the same worldview. This is also the time of life when teens find themselves having more freedom than ever before. That freedom, if not kept in check can lead to any one of many problems. In order to effectively help adolescents and those who work with them one must be familiar with the problems and frustrations that teens face. The writer of Ecclesiastes recognized that no one lives a life free from sorrow. Jesus promised his disciples that in this world, they would experience trouble. Severe stress and trauma happen to both the Christian and non-Christian, to the strong and to the weak, to the rich and to the poor. How can the counselor offer help, support, and healing to those experiencing acute stress and trauma? This all important subject is discussed in this course.
