Course Lessons

TRD 101: An Overview of Depression and the Status of Current Treatments

Despite the advances in treatment that have taken place over the last few decades, the STAR*D study and other research suggest that we have a long way to go, especially for chronic, refractory depression. In this presentation, Drs. Sibcy and Vance define and discuss the issue of Persistent Depressive Disorder and the status of treatment options that are available today.

TRD 102: The Chronically Depressed Patient: A Deeper Understanding of Depression

Depression is a multifaceted problem. To truly understand this disorder, it is best to examine it through an integrated model approach. In this presentation, Drs. Sibcy and Vance help therapists identify the chronically depressed patient through extensive psychosocial profiles, along with addressing common treatment history.

TRD 103: Chronic Depression and Interpersonal Neurobiology

Neurobiology plays a significant role in the understanding and treatment of depression. In this presentation, Drs. Sibcy and Vance introduce the concept of interpersonal neurobiology and walk participants through the brain and its functions.

TRD 104: Attachment, Internal Working Models, and Depression

This presentation covers the basic structure of the secure base system, which involves how the brain and one’s sense of self develop within the context of attachment relationships. This lecture also discusses models of attachment and internal working models as they relate to depression.

TRD 105: Relationship, Healing, and Transformation: An Overview of CBASP and Christianity

This presentation touches on Kiesler’s Interpersonal Circumplex Model and also provides students with a thorough overview of the Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy and its components. Christian integration and accommodation are significant parts of therapy for many clinicians—this lecture touches on ways Christian caregivers can effectively integrate CBASP principles into their treatment models.

TRD 106: CBASP Tools and Techniques: Significant Other History

In this presentation, Drs. Sibcy and Vance continue the discussion of CBASP tools and techniques, focusing specifically on the role and purpose of the Significant Other History. They discuss the function of Significant Other History in the therapeutic setting and unpack the five steps of conducting a Significant Other History. Additionally, this lecture presents a case study illustrating the importance of this technique in helping the therapist understand and best help the client.

TRD 107: CBASP Tools and Techniques: Situational Analysis Part I

Drs. Sibcy and Vance continue the discussion of CBASP tools and techniques, focusing specifically on the role and purpose of Situational Analysis. Drs. Sibcy and Vance unpack the seven steps of Situational Analysis. Viewers will also explore and understand techniques such as the Elicitation Phase and the Remediation Phase.

TRD 108: CBASP Tools and Techniques: Situational Analysis Part II

Drs. Sibcy and Vance continue to unpack Situational Analysis and its use with chronically depressed patients. Unlike many other tools and techniques, Situational Analysis is one that will be utilized in nearly every counseling session. Dr. Vance walks students through the step-by-step process of conducting a Situational Analysis with a client and provides an in-depth case study.

TRD 109: CBASP Tools and Techniques: Disciplined Personal Involvement

Drs. Sibcy and Vance explore and explain the role and purpose of Disciplined Personal Involvement. Techniques, such as Interpersonal Discrimination Exercises and Contingent Personal Reactivity, are discussed. Throughout this lecture, participants will overview and realize a deeper understanding of the core steps of Disciplined Personal Involvement and discover how it can be used to help clients work through their emotional issues.

TRD 110: Measuring Progress and Change Throughout Counseling and Therapy

To get an accurate read on the efficacy of treatment with clients, it is essential to measure progress and change throughout the course of therapy. Drs. Sibcy and Vance describe the importance and benefits of measurement in CBASP therapy for both counselors and clients. The presenters discuss several case studies and illustrate how measurement can shed light on the treatment for all involved.

TRD 111: Christian Integration and Accommodation

CBASP is a versatile treatment that can be easily integrated with the Christian faith. In this presentation, Drs. Sibcy and Vance walk through ways counselors can incorporate Christian principles and techniques into CBASP therapy if working with clients of faith. Students learn how to integrate Christian principles on both the therapist and client level in a way that is beneficial to clients.

TRD 112: Role-play: Clinical Diagnosis of Persistent Depression

How do you diagnose chronic depression? Should you always use CBASP or are there times when it would be better to use other treatments? Drs. Sibcy and Vance demonstrate this through role-play. Students will witness role-plays that reveal what questions to ask in the initial diagnostic interview, how to introduce CBASP to a client, and how to set the stage for CBASP.

TRD 113: Role-play: Significant Other History

What precisely should you do when conducting a Significant Other History? Drs. Sibcy and Vance demonstrate in this presentation how to work with a client in gathering a Significant Other History. Students will learn how and when to do this portion of the CBASP treatment and how it can be used throughout the sessions.

TRD 114: Role Play: Situational Analysis

How do you conduct a Situational Analysis? Drawing from the information presented in the previous lectures, Drs. Sibcy and Vance role-play a session where the counselor and client work through creating a Situational Analysis. Students will be able to watch as the presenters portray a scenario in which a client is helped to understand what needs to take place for him to receive his desired outcome.

TRD 115: Role-play: Disciplined Personal Involvement

In this final segment of the CBASP role-play, Drs. Sibcy and Vance role-play how to use Disciplined Personal Involvement to demonstrate to clients that their actions impact those around them. Particular emphasis is placed on working through issues in counseling in a therapeutic way. With care and intentionality, therapists can help clients discover how to work through conflict in a healthy manner.
