Personality disorders are unique mental health disorders that require unique therapeutic interventions. They are also much more prevalent than realized and are increasing in numbers. Unfortunately, many clinicians are untrained and ill-equipped to identify and treat these complex clients. It will also delineate the best strategies to treat and manage “Cluster B” personality disorders.

Unfortunately, many clinicians are untrained and ill-equipped to identify and treat these complex clients. Personality Disorders 2.0 is designed to explore the nature, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of personality disorders. It will also delineate the best strategies to treat and manage “Cluster B” personality disorders.

Learning Objectives  
Participants will…  

  1. Describe the development of personality disorders through a combination of genetic and biological predispositions and psychological and social risk factors.
  2. Identify and describe each of the personality disorders through their DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, demographics, and prevalence.
  3. Articulate the general principles of treating personality disorders, including assessment, diagnosis, transference, countertransference, and issues with treatability.
  4. Describe the most common defenses when treating "Cluster B" personality disorders, including projective identification, devaluation, seduction, and manipulation.

Treating “Cluster B” personality disorders can often become the bane of a clinician’s practice, especially since they tend to seek treatment more frequently than any other disordered personality group. This presentation explores the difference between managing and treating these individuals, the transference and countertransference issues that occur, as well as the best treatment practices for each.

Presenter  
Shannae Anderson, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist with over 25 years in practice. She is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she studied under renowned trauma expert Dr. John Briere and distinguished substance abuse researcher Dr. Michael Newcomb. Dr. Anderson opened her private practice in Thousand Oaks in 1998. She works exclusively with adolescents and adults presenting with several complex issues.
