Summary

Forgiveness is a recurrent theme in the counseling and caregiving process and, in many cases, must be addressed and successfully navigated in order to heal and restore relationships. This course is designed to help biblical and pastoral counselors understand what forgiveness is and what it is not, utilizing principles from scripture to bring light to the reconciliation process.

Course Lessons and Descriptions

FORG 101: Forgiveness: Letting Go of the Past and Pain
Ev Worthington, Jr., Ph.D.

This presentation focuses on forgiveness-related issues, including types of forgiveness, how to forgive, and how to let go of pain from the past. Dr. Worthington discusses the R.E.A.C.H. model he developed, and also explores key questions that clients often have about the forgiveness process—including receiving forgiveness, forgiving others, and the possibility of restoring relationships.

FORG 102: The Language of Apology: Regret, Responsibility, Restitution, Repentance, and Requesting
Gary Chapman, Ph.D.

Apologizing is an important biblical concept in building and maintaining positive and healthy relationships. Dr. Chapman introduces five distinct languages of apology that are often employed when trying to resolve conflicts, as well as how individuals orient in both accepting and giving apologies. Learning these languages helps facilitate the forgiveness process and preserve unity.

FORG 103: The Road to Recovery: Forgiveness and Transformation
Eric Scalise, Ph.D.

Forgiveness is a foundational principle in the Bible. Dr. Scalise examines the reasons people often struggle, the consequences of unforgiveness, what forgiveness is and is not, and the three primary areas where forgiveness is required in letting go of pain, hurt, and disappointment. The path to freedom and transformation encompasses confession, grieving, the role of truth, and accountability.
